Who do you have in your professional corner who’s both a friend and a cheerleader?
Someone you trust to tell you the truth, brainstorm with, learn with, and push you into action?
I met Audrey Prenzel, BA, BEd, CARW, CEIC at a PRWRA (now CDI) conference as an attendee back in 2001.
We just clicked!
I was SUPER impressed with her do-what-it-takes-to-make-it-happen attitude, ability to laugh at herself, and hysterical referencing to her two pugs, Chloe and Kiwi, who were skillfully entwined in her Facebook posts.
Better yet, I loved that this interweaving of personal and professional on social media acted as a funnel into her active niche group of job seekers.
We fit because we both work hard and play hard. I also like that she kicks my butt.
Like the 2013 CDI conference where she had me by the back of the neck ushering me to where resume writers and career coaches were lined up waiting to enter.
She whispered in my ear:
Now you’re gonna go down that line and hug everybody.
Inwardly I was Scooby Doo told to go encounter a ghost:
Ruh-roh–RAGGY!!!
That’s not what mama taught me!
She’d say:
Don’t invade their space; shake their hand!
Nope, we were hugging.
Sometimes mama doesn’t know best!
IT WAS AWESOME.
OK, at least one person tried to get away and we shook hands.
But the energy at that event was stellar.
Through the past 22+ years Audrey and I have laughed a lot of laughs, learned a lot at trainings we’ve attended together, led a whole lot of conferences, masterminded CDI, and built many programs for the careers industry.
That I could be this silly AND share my entire uber-personal Hawaii-style backdrop with you today is owed a lot to her and her recent visit.
It’s an awesome feeling to be yourself at work.
I’m rarely on Instagram at night looking for life lessons, but I saw two just last night that spoke to me:
You could be a whole ray of sunshine and people are still going to hate you because they’re addicted to rain.
What if your circle doesn’t inspire you? If the people in your circle don’t inspire you, they’re not your circle; they’re your cage. The door on my cage was never even locked. Turn the handle and walk out.
You’ve just got to be OK with knowing your Tribe is going to love and be magnetized by YOU!
