4 Questions to Ask Recruiters During a Job Fair

Spring is here and in many parts of the country, it’s job fair season! Before heading off to an upcoming career fair, take a few moments to put together your plan to engage with recruiters. Here are a few questions to steer your discussions:

  1. What does a career path within this organization look like?
Many organizations have career tracks. You’ll want to be sure that you are aware of the expected path for your profession, especially before you choose to work there. This will help you to identify if this is the right organization for you.
  2. What type of ongoing training does your company offer?
A big reason job seekers move to a different position is because they want to improve themselves. There is no better way to do this than through professional development. This question allows you to gauge how the organization feels about preparing you to do the best job that you can.
  3. Could you tell me more about the culture?
You’ll want to learn what makes the organization tick, what they support, and more about their daily operations. After all, you will not be able to gather everything from a company’s mission statement.
  4. How long have you been employed by this organization?
Feel free to ask the recruiter about their tenure with the company. They may give you insider information which can be very helpful with making an educated decision.

Remember that you will most likely not leave a job fair with an offer of employment. Instead, your mission is to gain contacts and follow up with them later. Crafting a plan and using these questions will help you tremendously during this information gathering stage. You will also know if you should continue to pursue an organization or move on to another.
