How To Negotiate For Outplacement Services In Your Severance Package

Being laid off is an incredibly stressful and, for many, a traumatic event. In fact, losing your job consistently ranks as one of the top 10 most stressful life events.

Beyond the emotional toll of losing your job, you must also focus on the practical side, like negotiating your severance package. You want to approach this conversation as level-headedly as possible, so you don’t leave money on the table, especially since it’s taking many job seekers longer than ever to find a new job in today’s employment market.

As a career coach, I’m often asked by impacted workers whether they can negotiate outplacement services as part of their severance package, and what strategies can help secure the best outcome. So, if you’re considering asking for outplacement support as part of your severance, you’re in the right place!

Can I Negotiate For Outplacement Services In My Severance Package?

Absolutely! It’s important to know that you can request outplacement support as part of your severance package.

Just like negotiating your salary, you can—and often should—negotiate the terms of your severance package. Many departing employees don’t realize this, and companies rarely advertise it. Of course, as with salary negotiation, your former employer can decline your request, but it’s always worth asking.

Tips For Negotiating Outplacement Services In A Severance Package

If you’re considering asking for outplacement support as part of your severance package, the process is often straightforward and frequently successful. Here are some of my top tips to maximize your success:

      1. Ask for what you want.

If you want outplacement services as part of your exit package, be sure to ask for them before signing any exit documents.

Some employers will automatically connect you with an outplacement firm or provide you with a list of potential service providers to choose from. Other times, the company will allow you to choose the outplacement firm you work with. Many of the clients I work with receive a lump sum for outplacement services and then have the option to choose the provider they partner with on their job search.

      2. Remember that you have power.

You have more power than you think when negotiating your severance.

Companies want you to accept their severance offer, since you’re often agreeing not to pursue legal action in exchange for payment. Therefore, it’s in the company’s best interest to offer you a fair, competitive package that helps them avoid a costly and lengthy trial.

(A quick note: I’m not an attorney, and I always recommend consulting with an employment lawyer to review your severance agreement before you sign it.)

      3. Don’t be afraid to negotiate.

Because you have leverage in the negotiation, you can request a package that truly supports your transition.

For instance, if they require you to work with a large outplacement firm that will be supporting hundreds or thousands of fellow colleagues—and likely rushing through the process—you can ask them to cut you a check and let you choose your own career coach.

      Final Thoughts

Although not all companies will offer exiting employees outplacement services as part of their severance package, it doesn’t hurt to ask. It can often lead to hundreds or thousands of dollars in additional compensation to work with a trained professional to support you in finding your next opportunity. You’ve got this!

[President] Laura DeCarlo's free resource changed everything for me. From zero to six-figures didn't come easy. I dedicated my time to study how her process worked and it did the magic.
