TORI Resume Writing Strategies: Donald Burns on Mind Control via Emotional Resonance

About Donald: Since 2008, Donald Burns – Executive Career Coach – has packaged the careers of 1600 executives, entrepreneurs, and technology gurus.

In addition to “hidden market” job coaching, he is known as one of the USA’s top resume writers – earned 17 TORI Awards for resumes and LinkedIn profiles – and samples of his work appear in many of the top resume books.

He started out as an electrical engineer with Motorola (BEEE, MSEE) and migrated to sales and sales management (VP Sales, MBA). After 15 years of corporate life, he graduated from Columbia Journalism school (MS) and launched into a new career as a trade-press writer and advertising copywriter. In 2008, after the NYC financial crash, he added executive resumes into his writing mix.

Burns says, “I know I’ve written a successful resume when the reader – a hiring manager or recruiter – says “how can any company not want to interview this person?!”

In this 29 minute program, Donald talks about how you can avoid the “black-hole” problem (of resumes) by infusing them with emotional resonance. In one point during the webinar, he mentioned “mind control resumes” and this is what I have deemed his process! Donald reviews the basic principle: 1) Hook the reader with an emotional “vibe” and 2) Then show logical reasons that justify an interview; the opinion: Most resumes are ignored because they lack an emotional vibe; and reviewing two samples that show how to resonate with readers and send the right emotional vibe.
