We get asked from time to time why CDI has a career superhero mascot on our logo and sprinkled throughout our resources and pages.
It’s not always an instant ah-ha moment when career practitioners see the superheroes in our logo. But the career superhero is at the heart of how we see our member resume writers, career coaches, and other career industry practitioners and how we set about serving them!
In fact, I, Laura DeCarlo, CDI’s founder and President, received a member email last week calling me the Chief Career Superhero. I was delighted! But it also made me realize that it was past time to talk more about ‘why superheroes’ beyond the origin story on our website!
The short answer to the ‘why’ is that if you are a career industry pro, then YOU ARE a career superhero!
You’ve likely heard similar stories from your clients who said your assistance and services:
… Saved my marriage (or saved my home).
… Helped me land my dream job and increase my salary by $47,000 a year.
… Let me turn my last $1000, that I was afraid to give you, into landing a new job I love.
Like a superhero facing impossible odds, you swoop in and save the day for job seekers!
An individual’s livelihood is at the heart of their confidence, quality of life, freedom, happiness, and life balance.
What you do every day for your clients has immense power. YOU change and save lives!
You’ve probably found yourself in the position of helping a client to change their life and then wondering why you aren’t reaping the same big rewards in your business.

So, let me tell you a little about how CDI came to be…
Before there was CDI, there was me, running my successful resume writing and career coaching practice.
I would go to industry conferences and be saddened to see and hear the same frustrations over and over from career industry pros. Most often they were:
- Charging too little and unsure how to increase their rates without losing business.
- Working through conferences and family events, stressed out and struggling with balance.
- Looking for best practices and next best strategies and being faced with outdated information or a being told that nothing ever changed.
- Struggling to figure out how to get ahead and really make their business work for them.
There was also one topic I heard talked about all the time, which was how badly most in our industry wanted to pass that annual $100K line.
Well, I had strategies for that for sure!
Not only did I crush the 6-figure mark in my business, I did so way back in the late 90s within three years of starting my business. My clients were all over the spectrum from new grads and retail sales staff with a vision for more up to 7-figure executives. My packages back then were $1200-1500 with a 94-97% close rate on consult conversions.
One of the many things I had tools for was:
How easy it can be to close $100K+ annually in new business as a career industry practitioner without working yourself into the ground.
So I’d end up sharing simple, targeted strategies and solutions, always to receive an email or call from a practitioner on how it ‘worked like a charm’.
But for every person I reached in that way, there were a hundred or more I didn’t.
So in the year 2000 I took over a resume writing association and rebranded and rebuilt it as Career Directors International in 2005.
CDI is the platform to help industry practitioners avoid reinventing the wheel so you can get right to super-charged success, satisfaction, and life balance.
Since starting CDI, I’ve shared all my secrets, learned new and cutting edge strategies to share, invited other industry expert to share their expertise, and invested in learning, learning, and more learning.
CDI regularly publishes resources, tools, reports, and video trainings from a variety of top, award-winning industry leaders. It’s not about ‘me’ but about ‘we’. And WE give our members the chance to share their expertise, boost their authority, and be part of something bigger.
I, and those who contribute to CDI, have worked tirelessly these past 17 years to ensure career practitioners around the world can successfully ramp up their expertise in career services and resume writing while building businesses with 6-figure revenue streams.
